Julius Shulman, the celebrated photographer of mid-century modern architecture, took these photographs of Memorial Coliseum in 1961. That Shulman was sent to Portland to photograph this building speaks volumes about the importance of this building to mid-century modernism in the United States and internationally. Based on its merits and these photographs, Memorial Coliseum was awarded an AIA Honor Award for design excellence.
The Julius Shulman images confirm that Portland has a masterpiece, an important piece of international level modern architecture, and a unique national treasure.
